OLT and GPON
The OLT is the heart of the last mile. A misconfigured OLT becomes mass complaints: offline ONUs, capped bandwidth, customers saying "it got slow after the upgrade."
What OLT and GPON is
An OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is the central equipment in an FTTH GPON/EPON network. Each port serves up to 128 ONUs via an optical splitter. Day-to-day operation involves provisioning new ONUs, adjusting bandwidth profiles, troubleshooting out-of-range optical power, VLAN-per-service configuration, and integration with the ISP management system.
What RASYS does
- Initial OLT configuration — authentication, management, NTP, syslog.
- Bandwidth profiles (traffic profiles) per service plan, with properly sized burst and CBS.
- VLANs per service — internet, TV/IPTV, voice — and Layer 2 isolation between subscribers.
- ONU troubleshooting — rx/tx out of range, loop, orphaned ONU, duplicate MAC.
- PON health monitoring — average power, offline ONUs, damaged splitter alarms.
- OLT migration — downstream with minimal downtime whenever possible.
- Firmware upgrade with controlled maintenance window and rollback plan.
Equipment we work with
Huawei MA5800-X2/X7/X15/X17, MA5600 (legacy); FiberHome AN5516-01/04, AN6000; ZTE C320, C300, C600; Datacom DM4000, DM4100; Parks; Intelbras.
When it makes sense to talk to us
You purchased a new OLT and need to bring it to production; ONUs are dropping without a clear pattern; contracted bandwidth is not reaching the customer; you inherited a misconfigured OLT from a predecessor; you are switching management systems and the integration with the OLT broke.
Talk to us — initial conversation, no commitment. See also: PPPoE, RADIUS.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which OLT vendors do you work with?
Huawei (MA5800 and MA5600), FiberHome (AN5516, AN6000), ZTE (C320, C300, C600), Datacom (DM4xxx), Parks, Intelbras. Other brands: we read the manual.
Do you integrate the OLT with our management system (MK-Auth, IXC, SGP, Voalle)?
Yes. We configure the OLT to align with your management system: VLAN per service as the system expects, traffic profiles named after the plan, RADIUS for authentication, SNMP for status reads. The subscriber-record layer and the provisioning trigger usually live in the management system — our role is to make sure the OLT responds correctly. MK-Auth, IXC, SGP, and Voalle are Brazilian ISP management systems we work with regularly.
Can you migrate between OLTs without taking customers offline?
In pure GPON, a migration without downtime requires mirroring the PON on the new OLT. When the scenario allows it (idle capacity, same splitter can serve both), we do it. When it does not, we plan a nighttime maintenance window with mass migration per PON.
Can you diagnose an ONU with out-of-range optical power remotely?
Yes. We read the ONU's rx/tx via the OLT, compare with history, identify the characteristic pattern (dirty fiber, degraded splitter, defective ONU), and tell you exactly what to send the field tech to do.
